The Purple Dragon Takes Flight to Save Another Realm Next Spring

Spyro Returns

Revealed in last month's Xbox Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond serves as the first brand-new adventure for the purple dragon's core franchise in 20 years. Developers at Activision's Toys for Bob studio have followed a similar path to their work on another former PlayStation franchise, Crash Bandicoot; this new Spyro title has been made as a direct sequel to the trio of original titles the studio remastered in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. From the word of Chris Penwell of GAMETYRANT, As the title suggests, Spyro finds himself stranded in a realm he's never seen before, setting out in search of a path way home as a new enemy called the Scavs attempt to conquer this realm beyond, Spyro teaming up with new companions to defend it “before it’s changed forever,” as seen in the game trailer's description (Chris Penwell, June 7, 2026). This excerpt lays down what we currently know about the story, as the showcase trailer did not give us any notable hints about the main villain's identity or if any other familiar characters will return.

True Dragonflight

Spyro's grown since the Reignited Trilogy, and the gameplay has grown to reflect it. The gliding that defined the original trilogy has given way to what the developers refer to as "true dragonflight." At the push of a button, Spyro can take to the skies all on his own. As stated by Justin Carter of Gizmodo, Lou Studdert of Toys for Bob spoke with IGN; for the prototype phase, this new open flight was a major focus, aimed at being a “natural” extension of the effortless flow seen in previous Spyro adventures. However, this doesn’t that clearing stages will be a breeze in Realm Beyond, as the purple dragon's aerial maneuvers will to demand that players "dive down to increase flight speed or ignite campfires so the wind helps his movement." (Justin Carter, June 7, 2026) This section serves to further define the new core mechanic built into the franchise's familiar collect-a-thon platformer gameplay.

New Spyro, Familiar Voice

It has been confirmed that legendary voice actor Tom Kenny will be returning to voice the titular dragon. As written by Sam Chandler of SHACKNEWS, "Kenny voiced Spyro in numerous games, starting in 1999 with Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!", returning for 2000's Spyro: Year of the Dragon and 2002's Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly; he was also brought in to voice the iconic purple dragon in 2018 with Spyro Reignited Trilogy in and Spyro's guest star racer role in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. (Sam Chandler, June 7, 2026) This closing tidbit establishes that the spirit of the original games will be there to greet players when Spyro: A Realm Beyond arrives in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
