Could Ubisoft be paving the way for the return of the original Assassin's Creed?
Assassin's Creed, the 2007 smash hit that landed on Xbox 360 and PS3,
redefined the AAA gaming space... for better or worse. The game that established the
eternal struggle between the Order of Assassins and the Knights Templar, the game that shaped the model inspiring other open world adventures in gaming. Next year is the twentieth anniversary of Assassin's Creed I. Since this is a legendary game that launched this legendary franchise considering the ungraceful aging of this game is paramount when compared to the continuation of subsequent entries. Will Ubisoft consider a long overdue remake?
From the Rumor Mill: Who's been talking?
Well, in a podcast from consistently reliable industry leaker Tom Henderson, the upcoming remake of the swashbuckling, seafaring Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced isn't the only remake currently in Ubisoft's pipeline. There is a French YouTuber by the name of j0nathan, another reliable leaker, who was talking to a supposed contact in 2023, and they name-dropped the first Assassin's Creed in such discussion. It makes perfect sense to return to what made Ubisoft a household name. After contemplating the discourse online, one could see how they would decide to delve into full remakes. But as it's said..., "Nevertheless, naturally, Ubisoft hasn't revealed whether they're working on a remake for Assassin's Creed" ( Jessica Filby 2026).
Imagining What Could Be
What we know of the upcoming Black Flag remake may help us picture the sort of vision Ubisoft may have for a return to the story of Altaïr. While a remake of the original Assassin's Creed most likely won't put you at the helm of a ship, there's the possibility of this overhauled combat system being geared more towards action with combos and faster parries, and new quests being handed out by faces familiar and fresh. However, an Assassin's Creed 1 remake wouldn't have the hang-ups on whether or not DLC content would return, because the original had no DLC. What are the remake possibilities: Could this tale set against the backdrop of the Third Crusade actually balance the tried and true with new and fresh the way Capcom's recent Resident Evil remakes have, or will it skew too far from the original, or will Ubisoft play it safe? That remains to be seen!
